Building trike: which metal to use?

What you need is strength to weight ratio. Chrome molybdenum steel is the obvious chioce, but you have to have it heat treated after welding. Some aluminum alloys are much better than others in this regard, but you still have the heat treatment problem. If you cannot heat treat the finished product (because renting a large enough oven might cost too much), just go with mild steel.
