What does the integral test really show if it doesn't mean the series converges to 1?

All the integral test shows is that the series converges. The number you get out is virtually meaningless, but as long as it is finite, the integral converges. Finding the sum of the series is a whole different story. If the sum is equal to the integral for some problem, that is probably just a coincidence.
